Guitaa Artists Centerstage – “StephStrings”

There are many musicians who love to tell a story through their music but only a few come up with a unique way of telling it. Today, on Artist Centerstage, we are talking about an amazing multi-instrumentalist and her name is“StephStrings”.

The Melbourne based musician has formed a unique style to the way she performs where listeners can relate and create their own stories through her beautiful music.

So, Let’s find out, how this amazing artist fell in love with the world of music, and how her journey into music began!

  • Introduce yourself to our audience, what genre of music do you consider your work to be?

I’m StephStrings, I’m a multi-instrumentalist but my main passion in music is guitar. I’d say my genre is a mix of coastal folk and fingerstyle, however occasionally I experiment with psychedelic sounds and ambiance.

  • What and who were your early passions and influences, What inspires you to make music?

As a kid, the biggest influence was when I started jamming with two of my older cousins and my Dad, they showed me a lot of styles and helped shape the way I play. I’ve also had legendary guitar teachers over the years who opened me up to all sorts of artists and genres and showed me why music is so important.

The artist that influenced me early on was definitely Ed Sheeran. I used to listen to Ed on repeat, every second of the day and tried to copy every single strum in all of his songs. I started song writing because of him!

  • Tell us about that one memorable performance and favorite venue which you still wish to happen again?

My most memorable performance was back in high school. I got to play an original song in front of over 1,000 people and I had my family and friends in the audience which was pretty cool. It was the turning point where I realized I wanted to take my music to the next level.

  • Any funny story of a mess up during your performance where you handled that situation like nothing happened?

I was performing at a tiny festival and I completely mucked up the song I was playing, but no one seemed to notice, so I ended up changing the whole song and making up the chords on the spot. I ended up putting that made up song on my EP that I released 6 months later.

  • If you could collaborate with any musicians(dead/alive), who would you collaborate with and why?

I’d love to collaborate with the John Butler Trio and Tash Sultana. I love the energy that the JBT have and I love how colourful Tash’s music is

  • What has been your biggest challenge as a Musician? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

The biggest challenge has been trying to be an inventive musician, in the way that I don’t want to go mainstream and create music like the musicians that most of us would hear on the radio. It’s pretty hard to be ‘different’ because lots of people tend to enjoy pop music more than some of the styles I try to experiment with. To overcome this, I try to mix pop music with my individual style to create something familiar yet new at the same time.

  • What Tools and techniques you use to improve your singing/instrumental playing?

I practice a lot and I always push myself to learn new techniques and diverse ways of playing the guitar. To improve my music in general I’ve made it a personal challenge to learn how to play as many instruments as possible. At the moment I’m playing the guitar, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, drums, piano, and pan flute!

  • Would you like to share a testimonial for Guitaa? If Yes, Why do you love Guitaa?

Guitaa is super helpful for their followers and has awesome content!

  • What advice would you have for someone wanting to become an Artist?

I’d probably say to stick at it and keep trying to expand your ‘music brain’ as much as you can. Listen to all types of genres and try out different techniques to find what kind of musician you are and what makes you tick. It makes it easier to follow your dream if you know exactly what you want/who you are in the music world. Also, perfect practice makes perfect! It may take weeks, months, years, but it’s all worth it in the end!
