Guitaa Artists Centerstage – Van Hechter

Today, on Guitaa Artist Centerstage, we have a Multi-talented pop artist, singer/songwriter “Van Hechter” who grew up between Canada, France, and the U.S.A who we have featured a few times. After successful hits, he is back with a new single “The Delight” featuring Chauncey Dandridge.

We have recently got in touch with Van Hechter as he made time from his busy schedule to answer some of the most interesting queries about his music and upcoming projects. So, Let’s get to know about the talented artist, about his challenges as a musician, and many more.

  • Introduce yourself to our audience, what genre of music do you consider your work to be?

I am a pop singer who writes new-disco songs for people of all ages but mostly youngsters between ages 16 and 28. I laugh at myself, always, musically, and in my lyrics. I’m here to present ”The Delight” a new duet with NYC DJ Chauncey Dandridge, and also to talk about a solo song that’s doing very well, charting in the US entitled ”I Am”!

  • What and who were your early passions and influences, What inspires you to make music?

Disco, Motown, punk, and dance. I also love 50’s jazz. I make music because I must. I think my duet partner Chauncey Dandridge plays music because he must. I’m not even sure it’s a choice. From then on; everything is inspiring… You turn everything you live and see into a song…

  • Tell us about that one memorable performance and favorite venue which you still wish to happen again?

Actually– this is a really cool question because it is in fact linked to Chauncey… He greeted me as a guest at The Stonewall Inn a few years ago. He was spinning that night, I loved his style. By the end of the evening, I told him; ”I want to play here”… He made it happen. A few days later I was onstage singing ”Love Elastic”. The crowd REALLY understood me- the many levels of what I write… Since then I’ve written an anthem for the place and we now have this duet ”The Delight” to sing live together at the Stonewall as often as possible! The DJ is now also a singer and me- well- I love to have a stage partner once in a while! Especially him!

  • Any funny Story of a fuck up during your performance where you handled that situation like nothing happened.

Some guy kept walking in front of me while I was trying to perform, giving me the finger repeatedly. His girlfriend found it hilarious. I was getting really pissed off as security wasn’t reacting. By the second verse of my song, I grabbed him by the shoulder and French kissed him. The crowd burst into laughter. I finished the tune holding him by the hand, dancing a bit with him. Then when it was over I pushed him back into the crowd. You gotta turn everything to your advantage…

  • If you could collaborate with any musicians dead/alive, who would you collaborate with and why?

I want to do something with Calvin Harris.

  • Any Tips to keep the balance between professional and music life?

For me, it’s all one. Everything is linked to music; my workouts, my lifestyle, my diet, the way I fix my finances… I have great friendships and am open to love (at times) but everything else revolves around the songs I write and play. I like it that way mind you. I don’t feel at all like it’s a sacrifice.

  • What has been your biggest challenge as a Musician? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

Singing on the pitch. God! For years I was flatter than flat. I felt horrible about it. I spent a whole lot of time hating myself but I kept going and now I’m fine.

  • What Tools and techniques you use to improve your singing/instrumental playing?

I really need to vocalize every day- I corrected many flaws through consistent keyboard work and I don’t want to experience a setback. So I just do it- every morning.

  • What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

I don’t think I’m big or grand enough to give advice. Who am I??? I say, simply; follow your instincts and don’t listen to what everybody says. If you’re convinced of something; go for it. The worst thing that could happen is a failure and nobody dies from that!
